A study of the changes in duties and responsibilities of a district superintendent as a result of reorganization of school districts

Educators, legislators, parents and taxpayers have shown increased interest in the trend toward school district reorganization in the state of California. The California State Legislature has contributed to the trend by the passage of reorganization legislation beginning in 1945. The aforementioned groups have shown increased interest and involvement in the movement as the legislation has affected the district in which their children are in school, by which they are employed, or which is supported by their taxes. Changes in the structural organization of school districts in California have occurred slowly with a slight upsurge of reorganizations taking effect during the last six years. A study of statistics showed that in 1960 there were one hundred seven unified districts in operation in California while in 1965-66 the number of unified districts had increased to one hundred ninety-one. (See Appendix A for statistics on the number of unified districts established and operative in California for the period from 1945-46 to 1965-66).
