Teaching music fundamentals in the elementary and junior high school instrumental music class

It is quite apparent in surveying the literature relating' to this area of instruction that many authorities feel students are not receiving adequate training in music fundamentals. Buffer aays that most students have little to show for the years they spend in hands or orchestras aside from learning to play an instrument and to follow directions. They do not know what notes sre required to construct specific chords and have no knowledge of intervals, counterpoint or form. The situation would not he so alarming if this information were learned in other courses, but in most nstances it is not.
