The Relationship Between Childhood BMI and Asthma Independent of Tobacco Smoke Exposure: Bogalusa Heart Study
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between asthma and childhood obesity and to determine how race, sex, age, and weight status impacted this relationship while controlling for tobacco smoke exposure. Both childhood obesity and asthma are growing epidemics affecting thousands of children each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d. -d). This study utilized de-identified secondary data from the Bogalusa Heart Study (BHS) and analyzed the results from three cohort studies to determine if an association exists between childhood obesity and asthma. The participants of this study ranged in age from 2-19 years of age.
