Elementary school preventive drug abuse program: a survey of teacher needs and opinions in the Fresno Unified School District of Fresno, California

Drug abuse by young people is rapidly becoming America's most serious social and health problem. The recent staggering statistics of youthful drug abuse offenders in California, are not unlike those recorded all over the nation. The California Bureau of Criminal Statistics reports that "using 1960 as a base, the nine-year increase in drug offenses has been about 300 percent for adults and almost 2,000 percent for juveniles. " It is not, therefore, surprising that pressure is being brought to bear upon, the public schools to provide more effective preventive drug abuse education.
