Physical geography: a study of Tulare County, California

The purpose of this paper is to examine the physical geography of Tulare County, California, with particular reference to landforms, climate, soil, water, and vegetation. This study is justified by the fact that available literature concerning the study region is highly specialized with a noticeable void with respect to presenting the interrelationships that exist among the various physical elements. The area employed in this study has been the home of the writer for the past twenty of his adult years. The study was made during 1966-67 and involved field trips, library research, and interviews. Agencies whose reports and personnel were utilized and whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged include the U.S. Weather Bureau, California Division of Mines and Geology, Kaweah Delta Water Conservation District, Tulare County Planning Commission, U.S. Forest Service, California Department of 'Water Resources, and the University of California Department of Agricultural Sciences. The official status of these agencies and others whose studies were employed in this paper implies a high degree of accuracy. Data obtained from these sources will be accepted as valid unless serious discrepancies are observed.
