Practical use of the sociometric system in the Industrial Arts Department of El Cajon Valley High School, El Cajon, California

Industrial arts is concerned not only with the projects made by students, but also with useful techniques which promote better classroom control and prepare students for better human relations in their respective places in the community. The Industrial arts teacher must experiment with an assortment of Ideas which will benefit the child who is isolated from the class as well as reveal to the teacher any cliques. The Industrial arts teacher should become sensitive to the subsurface aspects of group behavior in the class. The teacher cannot in many cases Interpret the frowns and smiles, or even the silences, without help. Fellow teachers, research reading, or conferences with counselors are limited sources of help. The writer is concerned with the method of appraisal known as sociometry. This method was used in the Industrial arts classes at El Cajon Valley High School. It Is desired that this study will aid industrial arts teachers in the guidance of students to a better understanding of their problems. It is the purpose of this study (1) to compare the social adjustment of students who are accepted by their peer group with those who were rejected by the same group; (2) to show the relationship of intelligence between the accepted and rejected groups; and (3) to determine whether another quality, such as chronological age, is an influential factor in the results obtained.
