A syntactic sketch of Wükchumni

Wukchumni is a dialect of Yokuts, a California Penutian language former 1 y spoken In the southern San Joaquin Valley. The linguistic family of Yokuts was observed by Kroeber (1907) to be comprised of a number of dialects all closely related, but divided Into two groups called the foot-hill and Valley divisions. Wukchumni belongs to the foot-hill division. Although no detailed study has been made In comparative Yokuts, It has been suggested that Wukchumni as well as Yaudanchi, Gawia, Yokod and Bokninuwad comprise a fairly recent split In Yokuts.1 There are only a few of the over forty dialects still remembered and these by only a few speakers.
