Effect of once-a-day versus twice-a-day feeding of whole milk and milk replacer on young Holstein calves

The principle consideration in this experiment was to determine whether once-a-day feeding can work on a small scale basis as well as a large scale basis in the San Joaquin Valley. In order to substantiate this, twenty-four Holstein bull calves were used, weight, and tape measurements were taken along with blood glucose and free fatty acid determinations and rating of the feces. In addition, observations were made of the interior of the rumen. The experiment also incorporated the comparison of whole milk and milk replacer, although this was not the major consideration of the thesis. According to Eide (32) this experiment was the first trial of this type conducted in the San Joaquin Valley.
