Collective bargaining in the wine industry of the Central San Joaquin Valley, 1937-1953

The purpose of this study is to determine the extent and conditions of unionism in the wine industry of the San Joaquin Valley. A further aim has been to make an analysis of the collective bargaining machinery used by the wineries and the unions in the area. There is practically no published material available on the topic under consideration. Nearly all of the information contained in this study has been obtained from a perusal of original records of the Winery Employers’ Association, the files in the offices if the Distillery, Rectifying, and Wine Workers’ International Union, A.F. of L., Local No. 45, personal interviews and attendance at collective bargaining sessions by the author.
